An ancient woodland on the edge of Bishops Stortford, bisected by the A120 bypass road. It is owned and managed by the Birchanger Wood Trust.
It has a variety of trees, reflecting its complex geology. Oak, ash and hornbeam dominate different parts of the wood, with a scattering of hazel, field maple, wild cherry and sweet chestnut. In spring parts of the wood are carpeted with wood anemones and bluebells.
The wood has a long history of coppicing and coppicing has been resumed here and there in the wood, creating glades full of flowering plants that are gradually shaded out as the coppiced trees regrow.
Visiting
Access from Parsonage Lane in Bishops Stortford. Follow Heath Row round to park near the water tower. The entrance is just beyond it.
Accessible at all times.
